Dr. Eva Poveda is a health researcher at the Galician Health Service (SERGAS) and she heads the Group of Virology and Pathogenesis at the Galician Sur Health Research Institute (IIS Galcian Sur) (https://www.iisgaliciasur.es/research-areas/inflammatory-and-infectious-diseases-immune-disorders/virology-pathogenesis/?lang=en). She is currently the Scientific Director of the IIS Galicia Sur.

 

Her research career has focused on the study of HIV/AIDS and other co-infections since 2001 and since April 2020, she has expanded her scope of study to include SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 infection. The results of her work have mainly focused on the molecular epidemiology, drug resistance, and pathogenesis of these infections, and have had direct applicability to the clinical management of patients. She has published 183 articles (h-index: 38) in major international scientific journals (https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4835-9875).

 

Dr. Poveda also has extensive experience in leading national and international HIV research projects, mainly in Europe and in the USA with her collaborators at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine (CWRU) in Cleveland, Ohio and in West Africa. She is a member of the Executive Committee of the Spanish HIV/AIDS Research Network Cohort (CoRIS) and Scientific Coordinator and Principal Investigator of the IISGS COVID19 Cohort, created in April 2020 with funding obtained from the ISCIII COVID19 FUND (COV20/00698) (https://www.iisgaliciasur.es/apoyoa-la-investigacion/cohorte-covid19/) and part of the ISCIII-COVID19 Registry. Dr. Poveda is a member of expert panels for the development of National Clinical Guidelines for the treatment and follow-up of people with HIV, such as the GeSIDA/National AIDS Plan consensus document on antiretroviral therapy in adults infected by HIV and coordinator of the GeSIDA document on the clinical utility of antiretroviral resistance studies. She is a member of scientific committees and organizers of national conferences and scientific meetings and is an editor and reviewer of international scientific journals (e.g. Frontiers in Immunology, Pathogens and Immunity, Journal of Infectious Diseases, HIV Medicine).

 

She is also actively involved in academic teaching and has supervised 8 doctoral theses to date: 3 at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and 5 at the Universidad de A Coruña. Dr. Poveda is particularly committed with the promotion of young researchers and is a member of the Scientific Committee of the GeSIDA Nov(b)el Group, which promotes generational change and research talent among younger professionals in the field of HIV infection.

Dr. Poveda is actively involved in science communication projects (VIH-Ciencia Abierta-FECYT) and initiatives to transfer generated scientific knowledge to civil society and to promote open science and to increase the visibility of women in science.  She is the founder and editor of the Scientific Communication Platform HIV&Co. Her scientific contributions have been recognized with several awards, including the 2012 LOREAL-UNESCO Award for Women in Science Programme in Spain and 4 editions of the Research Awards on HIV and other infections of the Consellería de Sanidade (Galicia).
